Many thanks to our customers for supporting us over the years
It’s the end of an era and for those of you who are interested in the shop & Wiclif’s back story, here goes.
Billy Morton started Mortons Yacht Supplies after building race winning Enterprises and the Mark, his own design of single hander. Boat customers started asking for trailers, covers, new fangled metal masts, and the retail business was born. Wiclif started working for Billy in January 1970 and took over the business in January 1978, renaming it McCready Sailboats. Initially Billy sold sailing cruisers and general chandlery but the business became more dinghy orientated after Wiclif took it over.
Wiclif was one of the first windsurfers in NI in 1977, and in the eighties windsurfing accounted for half of our sales, with well known brands like Windsurfer, Sailboard, Alpha, Bic, F2, Starboard, & Tushingham. The first Windsurfers sold for £468.
The Laser made an appearance in 1974 with Trevor Millar buying one of the first for, from memory, £295, and we went on to sell various models of Laser for 42 years, before changing over exclusively to RS Sailing.
Clothing was well represented too. We would have been one of the first stockists of Musto clothing, and at one time were Musto’s 13th largest outlet in the UK. We were also the first stockists in Ireland for both Rooster and Zhik.
McCready Sailboats was many a local sailors first Saturday or summer job, including Brian Spence, who started in 1986 and kept coming back every summer and eventually forgot to leave! Brian was responsible for initiating the supply of boats that were genuinely ready to sail, even to the sail numbers. More than one sailor was able to collect a boat from us and go straight to a championship and win. Those of you who have assembled their own boats will appreciate the time and expertise involved; most Irish sailors remained in blissful ignorance until we stopped selling Lasers!
Both Brian and Wiclif are still around, and welcome the opportunity to relive old times.
